长城是中国古代一项重要的军事防御工程，其筑造前后延续了二千多年。长城有效地保护了古代中国北方的生产活动，并促进了长城内外地区的经济与文化交流。在研究中国古代军事、建筑与文化艺术等方面，长城具有很高的史学价值。长城的功能设计与布局造型，与自然山脊、险关要塞相依托，具有点、线、面相结合的艺术美感，体现了建造者的审美情趣。长城的形象与气质，具有一定的精神人格象征意义。用视觉艺术方式多方位地记录长城遗迹，可以表现其既统一又多样的美学品格。
